The first time I came across this quote I was baffled and kind of felt attcked
Sounds harsh, right?
Sad as it may sound, that is the painful reality.
There’s a time I was in a similar situation. I could give my all to ensure everything worked for other people’ss jobs, neglecting my own aspirations.
The wake up call for me came when I realized that people will always prioritize their own personal agendas. If I didn’t take control of my own goals and dreams, I would end up helping someone else achieve theirs. And here’s the truth: If you let people think for you, they will think for you, without thinking about you.
This was a sobering realization, and it pushed me to shift my perspective from passive to proactive. I stopped playing the role of a bystander in my own career, working my butt off to impress rather ungrateful people and decided to put the same effort on my own inetrests.
Here’s what you can learn from this mindset shift and how it can help you gain clarity and control over your own growth:
Stop waiting for opportunitie, create them. I used to believe that I had to wait for the perfect opportunity or someone’s approval to take the next step in my career. But when I embraced the idea that no one cares about your dreams as much as you do, I became my own number one motivator. I started seeking out opportunities, creating ideas, and investing in my personal development without waiting for anyone’s permission.
Be intentional with your time.Time is your most valuable asset, and if you’re not careful, you’ll spend it helping others push their agendas without realizing it. I began prioritizing activities that aligned with my personal goals and values.
Whether it was learning new skills, building relationships that mattered, or working on passion projects, I became laser-focused on where my time and energy went.
Learn the power of saying ‘no.’ One of the hardest lessons I learned was that I can’t say yes to everything. The more you allow others to dictate your time and decisions, the less space you leave for your own growth. Saying no doesn’t mean you’re not a team player, it means you respect your own journey enough to set boundaries. Saying yes to yourself is often the most empowering decision you can make.
Realize that clarity comes from action, not thought. I used to think I had to have everything figured out before I could start moving toward my goals. What I learned is that clarity doesn’t come from thinking about what you wan, it comes from doing. Once I started taking action, even small steps, my vision became clearer, my confidence grew, and my path forward unfolded in ways I hadn’t anticipated.
You are either building your dream or someone else’s. This mindset shift taught me that every day, every decision, is a choice. Am I working on my vision, or am I just helping someone else achieve theirs? While it’s okay to contribute to other people’s successes, I needed to ensure that my own dreams weren’t taking a back seat. In the wrong environment
So, why does this matter?
At the heart of it, embracing a growth mindset puts you in the driver’s seat. It empowers you to take responsibility for your career, your decisions, and your future. You stop looking outward for validation or direction and start trusting that you have the power to shape your own path. It also teaches you that failure is not fatal, setbacks are lessons that help you grow stronger and more resilient.
In the selfish world we live in, it’s okay to give more attention to your own interests. Don’t be afraid to prioritize your dreams, and don’t wait for the perfect moment, create it.
